“What happened, happened, and it couldn’t have happened any other way. Why? Because it didn’t” — Peter Crone

To make something wrong from your past is futile because it’s impossible to reconcile. We can judge ourselves (or others) for what happened but that’s like wanting to control a past that can’t be changed.

Acceptance is the key to letting go of this holding on to the past.

That is not to say we have to approve of what happened. We can still learn from the past with the motivation to improve and change our behavior in the future.

This combination of a non-judging acceptance of the past and fresh insight into how to act in the future, without needless self-defeating mental chatter, is how we grow spiritually as human beings.

That sounds easy.

It isn’t.

The pain of something that happens to us that we don’t want, such as a breakup, injury, or death of a loved one is very real, and are the moments we find the most challenging resistance within ourselves.

“NO! This shouldn’t have happened… it’s unfair”.

However, resistance to life leads to friction with ‘what is.’ In other words, the reality of the situation. And this denial of reality is an extra form of suffering on top of the painful event in itself.

Do not deny your humanity.

Judgment of this resistance is another form of resistance.

Instead, become aware of your protest against unwanted circumstances and find some acceptance within yourself while aspiring to be better in the future.

An improvement in external circumstances is then a natural cascade.

“We’re all masterpieces and works in process.” — Peter Crone

Accept your humanity like you accept life as it unfolds.

Your life couldn’t have happened any other way.

Why?

Because it didn’t.
